Vive la télévision française

For those of you who haven’t yet discovered MHz–a portal for the online streaming of foreign television series–do it now. Far more interesting content than Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon.

For instance, two French series I’ve binged on recently have been A French Village, four seasons about the German occupation of France during WWII and the aftermath (cast shown above), and The Churchmen, about the contemporary workings of the Catholic Church and the challenging lives of four new priests. (Very even handed, not a promotion of the church.) Both fascinating studies in human nature and the organizations we’ve created.

I’ve also become a fan of Detective Montalbano (Italian TV). Even crime solving shows like this lack the horror and gore of American ones. They’re more character studies and mysteries.

There are tons of choices that I haven’t explored yet from Scandinavia, Japan, and the rest of Europe. Definitely worth checking out!
