I LOVE hyacinths…and for many years have bought bulbs in the fall and forced them. But for the past few years, the bulbs have gotten more expensive and less reliable. So, this year I just bought two in plastic pots that were about a week away from blooming–$2.50 each. They are really lifting my spirits amidst the gloom of this winter.
Experts say that you should just throw these bulbs away afterward because they won’t bloom again. But I’ve always planted them in my garden the following spring and 80% of them have continued to bloom for years.
The Scandinavians have beautiful ways of using hyacinths–and every other type of bulb–in their interior decor during winter. Here are a few examples from my pinterest boards.
