For Christmas, I gave myself the gift of enrolling in an old world patina course online where you do five projects and learn how to make your own gesso and paints, just like early artists did. It involves lots of layers of gesso on wood, then layers of oil paints, and distressing. I’m loving it and have already learned so much. I wish I had known all this 10 years ago!
The first project was a Byzantine icon and after a month in the making it’s done all but the distressing part, where you break through to the layers of gesso beneath the paint. That should be fun. Here it is in progress, and after distressing. The next project is a grey and ivory clock face, using some gold paint for flourishes. That’s going to take me a while, but I’ll do a post once it’s done.
