The Stockholm Octavo

stockholm

I just finished reading The Stockholm Octavo–a convoluted plot about the murder of Gustav III (for whom this blog is named), King of Sweden in the 18th century and a huge supporter of the French monarchy. It was a little hard to keep track of the playing card theme (an octavo is an eight card spread that foretells your future) but worthwhile to learn more about society and politics in Gustavian Sweden. I was especially interested in the “language” of folded fans, which I had only the faintest idea about and which was very intricate indeed and played a big part in the story.

I have four books stacked on my nightstand–so on to the next one! Happy reading…
