A new homage to St. David of Wales, the patron saint of doves.
Yesterday, we went to a fantastic exhibition of cast Russian icons at a local museum, which included many icons honoring saints. I was familiar with the painted icons, but not the beautiful diversity of copper alloy bas-relief icons in this exhibition. They were just dazzling. The history of the Catholic church in Russia was also fascinating, like the schism over Patriarch Nikon’s reforms that led to the persecution of the “Old Believers”–who were the creators of these icons. Just made me realize how little I know about Russian history beyond WW2, the Tsars, and Dr. Zhivago. What a huge, diverse population and country, and a very rich culture. I’m betting I will weave the inspiration from this exhibit into something I make in the future!
